One & One Theatre
Theatre for people who know the dark is real, but still leave a light on.
One & One Theatre is the creative home of Pete Watt: writer, director, adaptor and theatre-maker.
The work is story-led, actor-focused and unashamedly human. It is interested in ghosts, guilt, families, monsters, grief, survival, bad jokes at the wrong time, and the strange mercy of people still trying to love each other when they have no idea how.
From classic adaptations to new writing, from community stages to stripped-back storytelling, One & One is built around the belief that theatre does not need to be grand to matter.
It needs a pulse.
It needs people.
It needs to mean something.
Writing. Adaptation. Direction. Storytelling.
Pete’s work takes old stories, half-remembered myths, Gothic monsters, family ghosts and ordinary human damage, then drags them into the room where an audience has to sit with them.
The aim is not polish for its own sake. It is theatre that breathes. Theatre that has some dirt under its fingernails. Theatre that knows people are complicated, ridiculous, frightened, loving, selfish, brave and frequently all of those things before the interval.
Writing & Adaptation
Pete writes and adapts theatre that is playable, immediate and built for actors.
His work includes adaptations and reimaginings of classic texts, Gothic fiction, literary novels and myth, alongside original pieces exploring grief, memory, care, family and the things people carry but rarely say aloud.
The question is never, “How do we preserve this story behind glass?”
The question is, “How do we make it live now?”
Directing
Pete’s directing style is rooted in clarity, rhythm, atmosphere and trust in the actor.
A chair can be a room.
A silence can be an accusation.
A shadow can do more damage than a special effect if it arrives at the right moment.
The work favours theatrical imagination over expensive furniture. It asks what the audience needs to see, what they need to feel, and what is better left waiting in the dark.
Workshops & Reading Aloud
Alongside writing and directing, One & One offers workshops and facilitated reading aloud sessions for groups, workplaces and communities.
This strand uses story, voice and performance to build confidence, connection and conversation. The wellbeing is real, but it is not wrapped in scented-candle language. It is simply this:
People in a room.
A story shared aloud.
Someone listening.
Something shifting.
Theatre does not need to be grand to matter. It needs a pulse. It needs people. It needs to mean something.
